TACOMA, Wash. – Emiko Kahler had 13 kills and 10 digs to lead visiting Whitworth University to a sweep of Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday night at Memorial Fieldhouse.
Kahler's double-double was her second in a row and the 25-21, 25-13, 25-18 win gave the Pirates (8-4 overall, 2-0 NWC) a sweep of their conference-opening road trip to Tacoma.
Whitworth opened a 10-4 lead in the first set on a Logger attack error. Puget Sound used a 5-0 run to pull within 20-19 later in the set. But the Pirates finished on a 5-2 spurt , capped by two Kahler kills, to end the closest game of the match.
Puget Sound led the third set 7-4 after Whitworth's setting error. But the Pirates went on a 9-1 run to take a 13-8 lead after Saylor Anderson's service ace. The Loggers tied the set 16-16 on Samantha Johnson's kill, but Whitworth put the match away by outscoring UPS 9-2 down the stretch.
Whitworth finished with 10 service aces, including three by Vandaele. Vandaele also led the team with 14 digs. Tikhonov added eight kills for the Bucs.
Jordan Holman led UPS with five kills. The Loggers only had 23 kills in the match and only hit 0.010 as a team.
Whitworth will return to Spokane for its first home game of the season on Wednesday night against Whitman College.
