Volleyball Rallies to Split on Opening Day

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Whitworth rallied from down two sets to one to defeat Whittier College in five sets and split the opening day of the 2019 Southwester University Fall Invitational.  The Pirates were swept by Carthage College on Friday morning in the season opener.

Carthage defeated Whitworth 25-17, 25-11, 25-18 with a dominant offensive performance in the tournament's opening contest.  The Lady Reds hit .420 as a team with 41 kills and only seven errors in 81 attempts.  Megan Behrendt led Carthage with 11 kills and a .440 hitting percentage.

Emiko Kahler had six kills for the Pirates, while Madison Douglas, Abby Wolverton and Iris Tikhonov finished with five kills apiece.  Whitworth hit .156 as a team. 

The Pirates earned their first win of the 2019 season with the come-from-behind victory over Whittier, 25-20, 17-25, 15-25, 25-21, 15-12.  Kahler had 16 kills to lead the Bucs, while Douglas and Tikhonov finished with 10 each.  Douglas hit .391 with only one error in 23 attempts.  She was also in on five blocks.  Joelle Forbes dished 29 assists in her first career start as Whitworth's setter.  Kiana Vandaele had 24 digs and Kahler added 20 to lead the Pirates' defense.

Katelyn Popoff led the Poets with 12 kills and hit .444.

Whitworth will complete its participation in the tournament on Saturday with matches against host Southwestern University and Hardin-Simmons University.
