Pirate Women See Season End in 8-1 Loss

WALLA WALLA, Wash.– Whitworth dropped an 8-1 decision at Whitman on Saturday, which likely means the Pirates' 2019 season has come to an end.  Should Whitworth, Lewis & Clark and Puget Sound all tie for third place at 5-3, the Bucs will be the odd-team out in the upcoming Northwest Conference tournament. The Pirates (9-7 overall, 5-3 NWC) needed this win to secure a spot in the playoffs. Whitman (10-6, 7-1) secured second place in the NWC.

Jill Hughes and Avery Liening scored Whitworth's only point of the day at #2 doubles, defeating Kattie Pak and Lori Sheng 8-7 (7-5). Erica Lee and Emma Jo Wiley dropped the #1 match 8-3.

Wiley had the toughest battle of the singles matches, losing the first set 6-3 and the second 7-3 (7-5) at #3 singles. Marissa Kirk lost to Audrey Grigore 6-4, 6-4 in the #5 position.

Wiley and Kirk are the only Pirate seniors and their Whitworth careers concluded with this match.
