Whitworth Women Win 6-3 at George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore. – The Whitworth women's tennis team defeated George Fox 6-3 on Sunday to complete a sweep of its Northwest Conference weekend in Oregon.

The Pirates improved to 6-2 overall, 3-1 NWC, after weekend victories over Lewis & Clark and the Bruins (3-7, 1-2).

The Bucs jumped on the Bruins early with two wins in doubles. Erica Lee and Emma Jo Wiley won 8-4 at #1 doubles, while the #3 team of Marissa Kirk and Jill Hughes defeated Emily Brink and Alyssa Byde 8-5.

Lee led the Pirates in singles, beating Jillian Studer at #1 6-1, 5-0 (ret.). Wiley dropped the first set in six games at #3, but battled back to win 0-6, 7-6, 1-0 (10-8) victory.  Grace Bethards nearly duplicated Wiley's comeback, but fell 6-1, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5) at #4 singles.

Avery Liening (#2 singles) and Jill Hughes (#6) both earned the Bucs a point in the singles competition.

The Pirates will travel to Orlando, Florida on next week for three non-conference matchups at the USTA National Campus.
