Pirate Women Earn First Win over L&C Since 2012

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Whitworth women's tennis team earned its first win over regionally ranked Lewis & Clark since 2012 with a 5-4 victory in the Lewis & Clark Tennis Dome on Saturday. The Pirates improve to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in Northwest Conference play.

Whitworth won two of the doubles matches. The #1 duo Erica Lee and Emma Jo Wiley rolled to an 8-2 victory over Rachael Rice and Carla Thomas. Avery Liening and Grace Bethards won 8-4 at the #2 spot.

Lee easily defeated Madelyn Landerfelt 6-1, 6-0 at #1 singles to give Whitworth a 3-1 lead. Liening followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Riley Hanks at #2 for a 4-1 advantage. But Whitworth did not clinch the team victory until Jill Hughes beat Caroline Hennes 6-1, 6-1 at the #6 spot. 

The Pioneers (3-4 overall, 2-2 NWC) had rallied to tie the match 4-4 with victories at #3, #4 and #5 singles.

The Pirates travel to Newberg, Oregon to face George Fox on Sunday at 10:00 am.
