SPOKANE, Wash. – Mehrija Selava sent in the match-winner in double overtime for the visiting Whitman Blues to defeat the Whitworth Pirates 1-0 in Wednesday's Northwest Conference women's soccer contest.
Whitman (2-12, 2-9 NWC) takes the season series with Whitworth (3-11-1, 2-8-1) with the victory. The Blues won 4-3 in double overtime earlier this season. The Pirates drop to 1-5-1 in overtime matches.
The Pirates were in control for most of the match, not allowing the Blues to take a shot until the 61st minute. Whitman's best scoring opportunity in regulation came in the 63rd minute. Dani Espinoza took a free kick after Whitman was fouled just outside the box but sent her shot high.
A few seconds later, Jadyn Baumgartner found space and dribbled down the left side of the field but sent her shot just left of the post.
Whitworth had another opportunity with seven minutes remaining in regulation. Blues goalkeeper Allie Seracuse ran into her own defender, leaving Kendall Sharp some space, but her shot was blocked. In the 89th minute, Seracuse just got her hands on a shot taken by Rachel Wofford.
Selava ended the match two minutes into the second overtime. Pagan Hetherington sent a pass into the box pulling Pirates goalkeeper Kaycie Priske forward. Selava took a shot into the open goal to take the 1-0 win.
Whitworth finished with the lead in shots (19-7) and shots on goal (5-4). Seracuse made five saves and Priske recorded three.
Up next, Whitworth heads to Oregon to take on George Fox on Saturday, Oct. 26 at noon.
