SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's soccer team was defeated 4-1 by Puget Sound in Sunday afternoon's Northwest Conference match in Spokane.
Puget Sound (10-3-1, 8-1-1 NWC) scored eight goals this weekend in its trip to eastern Washington. Whitworth drops to 3-10-1 overall and 2-7-1 in conference play.
The Loggers maintained possession on the Pirates' end of the field for much of the first half, not allowing the Bucs to take any shots. Isabelle Arends made four saves in the half, preventing an early goal on one of them, running up to cut off a shot by Gabbie Berg in the seventh minute.
Puget Sound took the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute. Radhi Webster Shultz dribbled into the box sending her shot over Arends, off the crossbar and into the goal.
Ava Cholakian doubled the Loggers lead in the 41st minute. Cholakian one touched a pass by Hayden Hotchkiss, aiming it into the lower left corner of the net.
The Loggers extended their lead 10 minutes into the second half as CeAnn Romanaggi found Berg who knocked in her sixth goal of the season. Romanaggi leads the NWC with eight assists on the year. Cholakian scored her second of the match in the 77th minute to increase the Loggers' lead to 4-0.
Whitworth got on the scoreboard with 10 minutes remaining in the match as Kendall Sharp sent a cross in front of the goal to Gabriella Coprivnicar. Coprivnicar sent in her first goal of the season for the Pirates to cut the Loggers' lead to 4-1.
The Loggers finished with the lead in shots (22-3), shots on goal (13-1) and corner kicks (6-0). Arends finished with a season-high nine saves.
The Pirates return to action on Wednesday to face Whitman at 3 p.m. on the Whitworth Soccer Field.
