McMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Whitworth women's soccer team was defeated 3-2 by Linfield in Sunday afternoon's Northwest Conference match in Oregon.
The Pirates drop to 2-7-1 overall and 1-4-1 in conference play with the loss. The Wildcats (5-5, 4-2 NWC) add on to their NWC leading goal total (23) with the win.
Linfield got the scoring started in the 17th minute as Michayla Sponsel sent a pass into the box for Kristen Burke to send into the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Hannah Miller recorded her first goal of the season with five minutes remaining in the first half to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead at the break.
The Wildcats earned a penalty kick in the 59th minute which was put in by NWC scoring leader Sydney Kuehn to tie the match at 2-2. It was Kuehn's seventh goal of the season.
Sponsel knocked in the match-winning goal in the 76th minute. Kuehn set up the play with a pass two yards outside of the goal.
The Pirates attempted one more shot in final 14 minutes of play. Baumgartner took the shot, but it was saved by Linfield goalkeeper Madi Reimer to secure the 3-2 win.
Linfield finished with the advantage in shots (15-9), but Whitworth attempted more shots on goal (8-5). Isabelle Arends recorded two saves and Reimer tallied six.
Up next, the Pirates return to Spokane to face Willamette and Lewis & Clark to begin a five match homestand.
