WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The visiting Whitworth Pirates were defeated 4-3 in double overtime by the Whitman Blues in Wednesday afternoon's Northwest Conference women's soccer contest.
The Pirates (1-6, 0-3 NWC) doubled their season goals total in the loss. The Blues (1-5, 1-2 NWC) earned their first win of the season.
The match was exciting from start to finish, seeing a total of three ties and a combined 30 shots. Isabelle Arends finished with five saves for the Pirates. Elly Wolfe tallied sevens saves for the Blues.
The Blues began the scoring taking a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute as Pagan Hetherington found Sofia Ellington who headed the ball into the back of the net.
Whitman evened the score at 2-2 in the 66th minute as Tate Kautzky sent a shot from the top of the box into the right side of the net.
The Pirates took back the lead with 15 minutes left in regulation. Amanda Gerard sent a free kick into the penalty area that bounced around in the box until Kendall Sharp found an opening for her first collegiate goal.
Whitworth's lead did not last long as the Blues countered less than a minute later on a goal by Riley Glendinning to tie the match at 3-3.
Hetherington sealed the match four minutes into double overtime with a shot from the top of the box that made its way just outside the reach of Arends.
The Pirates created many opportunities with 10 of 13 shots being on goal but were unable to hold on to a lead. The Blues finished with 17 shots, nine on goal.
The Pirates return to Spokane on Sunday, Sept. 29 for their NWC home opener against George Fox. The match kicks off at noon.
