SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's basketball team earned its fourth consecutive victory, taking down the visiting Lewis-Clark State Warriors 89-83 to close the non-conference schedule with a big win.
Quincy McDeid and Jordan Smith each finished with 26 points for Whitworth (7-2) in the win. The teammates both had strong second halves with McDeid scoring 17 points and Smith totaling 18 in the last two quarters.
The Pirates handed Lewis-Clark State College (9-3) its third loss of the year. The Warriors are currently ranked No. 13 in the NAIA Division I Coaches' Top 25 Poll. Five players scored in double digits for LCSC. Jansen Edmiston led the team with 20 points.
The Pirates and Warriors were tied at 14-14 with 03:43 remaining in the first quarter. Edmiston put in a three-pointer to take the 17-14 lead followed by one of two made free throws by Kiara Burlage. Gray made a layup for the Bucs with 46 seconds remaining in the quarter to enter the second trailing 18-16.
Gray opened the second with another basket to tie the game back at 18-18. Peyton Souvenir made a three for LCSC at 08:46 and the Warriors led for the rest of the second. LCSC led by as many as nine points in the second quarter, but the Bucs continued to chip off their lead.
Gray put in a layup followed by a three-pointer by Brandner and a basket from McDeid to cut the Warriors' lead to 37-35 with just over a minute remaining before halftime. Whitworth entered the break down 39-35. Gray scored 10 points in the quarter.
Whitworth went on a 12-0 run over less than two and a half minutes to turn a six-point deficit into a 52-46 advantage with 05:12 remaining in the third quarter. LCSC entered the fourth quarter down 58-54.
Smith put in back-to-back threes to give the Pirates their biggest lead of the game, 71-60 with just under seven minutes remaining the contest. A 17-8 run by the Warriors in the next three minutes pulled them back within two (79-77).
Sydney Abbott made a pair of free throws to push the Pirates' lead to 81-77 with 03:37 left on the clock. Burlage put in a layup and a free throw to pull LCSC back within one. McDeid made a three-pointer and a layup down the stretch as the Bucs led 88-83 with 24 seconds left. The Warriors had three more fouls to give which shaved a few more seconds off the clock before Abbott closed the game with a free throw to secure the 89-83 victory.
Whitworth finished 43.8% (32-73) from the floor and 40% (12-30) from beyond the arc. LCSC shot 51.6% (32-62) from the floor and 34.6% (9-26) from three-point range. Whitworth outrebounded LCSC 42-33.
