SPOKANE, Wash. – Megan Dorney and Sydney Abbott led the Whitworth women's basketball team to an exciting 70-69 victory over the visiting Eastern Oregon Mountaineers on Friday evening in the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
The Pirates (3-1) battled to the final second with the Mountaineers (5-3). It was an exhibition game for Whitworth and an official game for EOU.
Abbott scored 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and added nine assists for the Bucs. Dorney tallied 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Whitworth got out to a 21-11 lead after the first quarter, but Eastern Oregon outscored the Pirates 26-13 in the second to take the 37-34 lead going into the break.
The Bucs kept the Mountaineers in reach, trailing 65-61 after a Macey Morales three-pointer with 01:59 remaining in the fourth. Abbott put in a layup with 20 seconds remaining to tie the game at 69-69. EOU turned the ball over with 13 seconds remaining then Dorney grabbed a crucial offensive rebound and was fouled to give the Pirates the go-ahead opportunity with two seconds left. Dorney missed the first free throw but hit the second to come away with the 70-69 victory.
Morales scored six points on two three-pointers in the final two minutes to lead the comeback. Quincy McDeid scored all her points (9) in the fourth including going 7-7 from the free throw line.
Whitworth shot 35.2% (25-71) from the floor, 25% (5-20) from beyond the arc and 88.2% (15-17) from the free throw line. The Pirates forced 25 Mountaineer turnovers.
Beverly Slater and Jillian Albright each finished with 14 points for the Mountaineers. Slater also added 12 rebounds for the double-double. EOU shot 46% (29-63) from the floor, 23.1% (6-26) from three-point range and went 5-10 on free throws.
Up next, Whitworth travels to Nampa, Idaho to take on Northwest Nazarene on Tuesday, Nov. 26.
