Bucs Win NWC Softball Opener

McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Whitworth University did just enough to advance past Pacific University 2-0 in the first round of the Northwest Conference softball tournament on Friday evening.  The Pirates (30-9) will play Linfield College, the tournament host, in a winners' bracket game on Saturday afternoon.

Drea Schwaier-Wolf scattered eight hits for a complete-game shutout. She improved to 18-3 and took advantage of outstanding defense to work out of a couple early jams.

Whitworth did not get a hit until the third inning when Morgan Portlock doubled.  Portlock scored the game's first run on a Rheanne Lewis sacrifice fly later in the inning.

Kinsey McNaught led off the fourth inning with a single and eventually came around to score on Michelle Silva's sacrifice fly.

That was enough offense to support Schwaier-Wolf.  Pacific got a pair of hits in the first, but Schwaier-Wolf got out of the inning by inducing a pop up.  The Boxers added two more hits in the fourth inning, but the damage was limited when Whitworth turned a double play on a sacrifice attempt.

Pacific (23-17) had two runners in scoring position in the fifth inning, but the Pirates turned their second double play of the game when the runner at third tried to break for home after Kaitlyn Donaca was thrown out at first.

At that point Schwaier-Wolf settled down and retired Pacific in order in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Linfield (33-6-1) defeated George Fox 6-0 in the other first round game on Friday.  Pacific and George Fox will play in an elimination game on Saturday.
