SPOKANE, Wash. – Eric Shaporda scored early in the first half to give the Whitworth men's soccer team a 1-0 win over the visiting George Fox Bruins in Saturday afternoon's Northwest Conference matchup on the Whitworth Soccer Field.
With the win, Whitworth (6-7-1, 4-4 NWC) splits the season series with George Fox (4-8-2, 1-6-1) with each team winning 1-0 at home.
Whitworth was in control of the first half, outshooting the Bruins 12-3 entering the break. Four of the Pirates' 12 shots were on goal. The Bucs held the Bruins to one shot on goal on the half.
Shaporda put the Bucs up 1-0 in the 15th minute with a highlight reel goal. Zanskar Blair lobbed a pass into the box that connected with Shaporda who took a sliding shot to record his second goal of the season.
The second half saw many stoppages in play with three Bruins earning yellow cards and one earning a red card. The Pirates received one yellow card.
Scott Penner and Drew Williams both attempted to extend the Pirates' lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, but Bruins goalkeeper Richie Seaman was there to make the save on both shots. Seaman made another save cutting off a shot taken by Britton Clifford in the 86th minute.
The Bruins made one last attempt to tie the match up, but Diego Gil's shot was just left. The Pirates did not allow a shot on goal in the second half.
Whitworth finished with the lead in shots (22-6), shots on goal (8-1) and corner kicks (5-4). Bo Broyles recorded one save and Seaman finished with seven.
The Pirates will square off with Pacific (Ore.) tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. to close the weekend.
