NEWBERG, Ore. – An early goal was enough for George Fox to hold on to the 1-0 win over the visiting Whitworth Pirates in Sunday afternoon's Northwest Conference men's soccer contest.
The Pirates (5-6-1, 3-3 NWC) looked to be in control offensively, but were unable to put many of their shots on target. The Bruins (4-7-1, 1-5) earned their first conference win.
George Fox scored the match's lone goal nine minutes in as Ohm Harape sent in a free kick that deflected off a Pirate defender and into the goal. The Bruins attempted one more shot on goal throughout the remainder of the match.
Whitworth created many opportunities in the second half maintaining possession on the Bruins end of the field but could not find the net. Drew Williams attempted four shots in 10 minutes and almost slid one into the net in the 56th minute, but his shot hit the post.
The Pirates finished with the lead in shots (20-8), shots on goal (5-2) and corner kicks (5-0). Eight of the Pirates' 20 shots were blocked by Bruins defenders. The match also saw a total of 45 fouls between the teams.
Up next, the Pirates travel to Walla Walla to face Whitman on Saturday, Oct. 12.
