FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Four Pirates scored in Whitworth's dominant 4-1 win over host Pacific (Ore.) in Friday's Northwest Conference men's soccer contest.
Freshmen Eric Shaporda, Christian Pumpelly and Braydon Chang recorded their first goals as Pirates (5-5-1, 3-2 NWC) in the win. Pacific (1-7-2, 0-3-1) was forced to play defense for most of the match, as the Pirates contolled possession.
Whitworth got out to an early lead as Shaporda found the net three minutes into the match. Chase Reidt earned the assist. The lead did not last long as the Boxers tied the match at 1-1 four minutes later. Braden Kojima found Lucas Muller who ran by his defender and dribbled in his shot.
Reidt continued to set up scoring opportunities, finding Pumpelly who took a low shot from the top of the box that made its way into the left corner of the net to give the Pirates a 2-1 lead in the 26th minute.
Britton Clifford extended Whitworth's lead to 3-1 in the 70th minute off a pass from Johnathan Guglielmetti. Clifford has scored in back-to-back games. Chang kept the Pirates' scoring going firing in a shot in the 83rd minute to secure the 4-1 victory.
Whitworth goalkeeper Bo Broyles played an important role in finishing with the wide scoring margin. He prevented a game-tying goal in the 63rd minute, punching out a header from Woodey Greer. He also saved a penalty kick late in the second half, diving to his right to knock away the shot taken by Grant Rutledge.
Whitworth finished with the lead in shots (17-9), shots on goal (11-4) and corner kicks (13-4). Broyles finished with three saves and Jack Cuevas recorded seven.
The Pirates get the day off tomorrow before taking on George Fox on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
