REDLANDS, Calif. -- Chase Reidt and Britton Clifford scored in the second half to rally the Whitworth men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over the Redlands Bulldogs on Sunday night to finish off the Pirates' first road trip of the season.
The Pirates begin the season on a positive note, improving to 2-0 with the win. The Bulldogs drop to 0-2.
Both back lines held their ground in the first half as the Pirates and Bulldogs started out scoreless. Both defenses allowed one shot on goal to finish up the first 45 minutes of play.
The Bulldogs struck first when Steve Acuña sent a short pass to the top of the box for Avery Jacobson to put away in the 63rd minute.
The Pirates bounced back quickly to tie the game up at 1-1 in the 66th minute. Eric Shaporda sent a quick cross into the box for Chase Reidt to fire in. The momentum was in the Pirates' favor as Ethan Kem almost got loose to put in another, but his shot drifted wide left.
Britton Clifford gave the Pirates the lead in the 79th minute. The sequence started off with a Pirate corner kick that made its way into traffic for Clifford to tap in the goal. Zanskar Blair was credited with the assist.
Both sides struggled to put shots on target throughout the match. The Pirates took 20 shots, six of which were on goal. The Bulldogs tallied 12 shots, two on goal.
Up next, the Pirates return home to take on Carroll (Mont.) on Friday, Sept. 6 and UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, Sept. 8. Both matches are scheduled to kick-off at 1:00 pm.
