ATLANTA – Emory University broke away from visiting Whitworth for a 12-7 non-conference baseball victory on Saturday afternoon with five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.

The Eagles improved to 2-1 while the Pirates fell to 2-3.  Whitworth completes its trip to the Southeast on Sunday with a game against Millsaps College, which will be played at Oglethorpe University.

Emory scored three runs in the first and four more in the second to open a quick 7-0 lead on Whitworth.  But the Pirates tied the game with a seven-run fourth inning.  Jaxsen Sweum doubled twice in the inning, scoring the Bucs' first run and driving in the final run of the rally.  Spencer Locati and Ian Sugrue each had two-run singles in the outburst.  Nicholas Nerud added to his team-leading RBI total this season as well and he how has eight in 2019.

The game remained tied 7-8 into the bottom of the seventh when the Eagles added one more big rally.  Ryan Adelman's two-run homer finished off the scoring for the hosts.

Brent Wise and Jack Brodsky combined to throw 5.1 innings of shutout relief for Emory.  Brodsky picked up his second win of the season after allowing only one hit over the final 2.2 innings.

Austin Rice started on the mound for Whitworth, but did not factor into the decision.  Darren Crosby pitched 4.1 innings and gave up two runs on four hits.  Connor Grydtal started the seventh and was credited with the loss.  Matthew Pulliam tossed the final 1.2 innings for the Bucs.

Sweum went 3-5 with the two doubles to lead Pirate hitters.  Nerud was the only other Whitworth batter with more than one hit.
