Beth Abbey enters her seventh year on the Pirates’ Cross Country coaching staff. She is an Associate Professor in Whitworth’s Health Sciences Department and is a registered dietitian.
A Whitworth alum, Abbey competed for the Pirates in cross country and track and field for four years. She was a member of the first Whitworth’s to qualify for the NCAA DIII Cross Country Championships in 2002. She competed in the 800-meter dash at the 2002 and 2003 NCAA DIII Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Following graduation in 2003 with a B.S. in Biology and a B.A. in Chemistry, Abbey earned an M.A. in Exercise Physiology from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN, where she was also an assistant coach for the Saints’ Cross Country and Track and Field teams. She went on to earn a PhD in Nutrition in Sport and Chronic Disease from Virginia Tech in 2009 and completed her dietetic internship from the Mayo School of Health Sciences (Rochester, MN) in 2010. She has taught courses in nutrition and personal health at Whitworth since 2010. No longer a mid-distance specialist, Abbey has completed several marathons with a personal best of 2:56:06.
