SPOKANE, Wash. – A trio of Whitworth Pirates have earned a place on the 2017 All-Northwest Conference volleyball team, which was released this morning by the conference office.
Emiko Kahler (So., Happy Valley, Ore.) is a first team selection for the second year in a row, while Cassandra Mendoza (Sr., Tekoa, Wash.) is on the second team for the third year in a row. Lauren Budde (Jr., Moraga, Calif.) received honorable mention consideration. NWC coaches vote for which players are on the team, and coaches cannot vote for their own players. Kahler averaged 3.10 kills per set and hit .210 in the Pirates' 25 matches in 2017. But in conference-only stats, on which the votes are based, Kahler averaged 3.52 kills per set and hit .238. She added 3.04 digs per set and 0.21 blocks per set. Kahler also had 20 service aces this season. Kahler was the NWC Offensive Player of the Week on October 2nd.
Mendoza led Whitworth with 3.17 kills per set overall in 2017. She hit .209 and added 2.94 digs and 0.23 blocks per set. She had 18 service aces. She had 279 total kills, which ranked second in the NWC in overall stats. In NWC-only stats, Mendoza averaged 3.13 kills per set, which was fourth in the NWC.
Both Kahler and Mendoza averaged 3.5 points per set to lead Whitworth in scoring.
Budde has earned her first all-conference recognition in 2017. She averaged 2.36 kills per set and 0.70 blocks per set. Her numbers were even higher in the 16 conference matches when she posted 2.64 kills with a .283 hitting percentage and 0.77 blocks per set.
The Pirate trio led Whitworth to a 15-10 overall record and a 12-4 mark in the NWC. Whitworth finished in second place.
