WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Codie Conching had 15 kills as Whitman College knocked off visiting Whitworth University 25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 25-16 in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Wednesday night in the Sherwood Center.

The second place Pirates dropped to 11-8 overall and 8-3 in the NWC.  The Blues improved to 6-10, 6-5 and ended a 12-match losing skid to Whitworth.

Cassandra Mendoza led the Bucs with 13 kills and Jessica Schmautz added ten kills.  Whitworth finished with 52 kills on the night to only 46 for Whitman.  But the Blues totaled eight team blocks and the Pirates had 33 attack errors to only 19 for Whitman.

After Whitman won the opening set by leading from the start, Whitworth appeared poised to tie the match in the second frame after pulling into a 20-20 tie on a kill by Schmautz.  But the Blues closed the second set on a 5-1 run.

Trailing 20-19 in the third set, Whitworth closed on a 6-1 run to hold out hope of rallying for a win in the match.  But Whitman led from the start in the fourth and final set as the Pirates struggled to an .073 hitting percentage in that stanza.

Madison Douglas added nine kills and Emiko Kahler had eight for Whitworth, while Gracie Meiners handed out 44 assists.  The Pirates hit only .120 as a team and finished the night with 2.0 team blocks.

Conching was one of three Whitman players to reach double figures in blocks.  Megan Henry had 11 and Kalli Dickey finished with ten as the Blues hit .203 as a team.

Whitworth continues its road trip with a match at Willamette University in Salem, Oregon on Saturday.

Whitman's win tonight was its first over the Pirates since the 2012 season.
