Pirate Women Claim NWC Tennis Opener

Spokane, Wash– All three women's doubles teams won to give Whitworth a quick start in an 8-1 win over visiting Pacific on Saturday morning to kick off Northwest Conference play.

The Bucs advance to 4-1 overall (1-0 NWC), putting Pacific at 2-3 overall (0-1).

Emma Jo Wiley and Erica Lee won at #1 doubles with a score of 8-3, followed by the #2 doubles team of Avery Liening and Grace Bethards winning by the same score. Marissa Kirk and Jill Hughes pulled the #3 slot with a 8-7 (7-2) win.

Whitworth took five of the 6 singles matches, with Lee pulling out a victory at #1 in a third set. Liening topped Nishimira 6-1, 6-1 in #2 singles, and Wiley had a similar 6-1, 6-4 win over Chang in the #3 spot.

Pacific's #4 singles, Adrienne Powell, claimed their only point when Bethards retired after one set.

The Pirates host defending NWC champion Linfield Sunday morning at 11 at the Scotford Tennis Center.
