Whitman Doubles Up Whitworth 6-3
SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitman rolled to a 6-0 lead on the way to a 6-3 win at Whitworth in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match on Saturday afternoon at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The visiting Missionaries improved to 12-3 overall and 7-1 in the NWC, while the Pirates fell to 10-4, 6-2.
Whitman jumped to a 3-0 lead following the doubles matches. Emily Rolston and Morgan Lawless made quick work of Whitworth's Saryn Mooney and Jessi Steele 8-1 at #2 doubles. Soon after Maddy Webster and Hanna Palkowitz defeated Megan Wingfield and Claire Hemming 8-3.
The #1 doubles match was much closer. The Missionary pair of Alyssa Robert and Courtney Lawless jumped to a quick 4-1 lead on Alli Marshall and Erica Bosman. But the Pirates rallied to tie the match 6-6. Whitman then held serve and followed with by breaking Bosman's serve to win 8-6.
The Missionaries clinched the team victory by sweeping the top three singles matches. Roberg topped Marshall 6-4, 6-2 and Courtney Lawless defeated Bosman 6-4, 6-3 at the top two spots. Morgan Lawless beat Mooney 6-4, 6-3 as well to give Whitman an insurmountable 6-0 lead.
Whitworth ended up taking all of the final three singles matches. Steele beat Kate Kunkel-Patterson 6-3, 7-5 at #4, while Wingfield edged Webster 7-5, 7-5 at #5. Hemming won the only match that went more than two sets, defeating Rolston 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6) at #6.
Whitworth will remain at home to host Willamette and league-leading Linfield next weekend.
