SALEM, Ore. – The Willamette Bearcats defeated the Whitworth Pirates 2-0 Saturday afternoon in a matchup between the Northwest Conference's top two teams.
Willamette (9-0-1, 5-0-1 NWC) remained undefeated with the win. The loss was Whitworth's (5-2-2, 3-1-1 NWC) first of conference play. It also snapped the Pirates' six-match unbeaten streak.
The Bearcats maintained control for much of the first half, taking seven shots to the Pirates' two and scoring the half's lone goal. Whitworth's two shots in the half both came in its first 14 minutes.
Lacey Jones got Willamette on the board. Jones slotted a corner kick from Rachel Moulton into the bottom-right corner of the net to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead. The 12th minute score was Jones' second of the year.
Whitworth maintained better possession early in the second half, managing shots from Arielle Van Peursem and Gabriella Coprivnicar. The Bucs couldn't turn that possession into a goal however and remained down one until the Bearcats scored the second goal of the match.
Gena Main knocked home Willamette's second goal in the 67th minute. Shanna Keil sent a through pass to Main, who knocked her third goal of the year into the right side of the net.
Willamette finished the match with advantages in shots (22-7), shots on goal (10-2), and corner kicks (7-2). Molly Webster saved eight shots for the Pirates. Kristen Barclay needed two saves to earn the shutout.
Up next, the Pirates travel to McMinnville, Ore. to take on Linfield Sunday afternoon. The Bucs and Wildcats square off at 12:00 p.m.
