Sterk Leads Pirates Past the Pioneers

SPOKANE, Wash. – Amy Sterk scored one goal and assisted on another to lead Whitworth to a 2-0 win over visiting Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

The Pirates improved to 2-4 overall and 2-0 in the NWC with their second victory in a row.  The Pioneers fell to 0-5, 0-2.

Sterk got the Pirates on the board early when she headed in a corner kick by Carly Schilperoort in the 12th minute.  It was her second goal in as many matches after posting the game-winner in Wednesday's 1-0 win at Whitman.  She was the one who set up the corner when her shot attempt was barely saved over the endline by L&C keeper Geena Fong.

The Pirates added the second goal in the 39th minute.  Sterk took possession near midfield and led a 2-on-1 breakaway.  As she neared the top of the box Sterk fed Tiara Pajimola on the right side and Pajimola finished the attack for her third goal of the season.

"The two goals were a culmination of the team's effort," said Pirate head coach Jael Hagerott. "Amy is very good in air, and with Tiara's speed, they make for a dangerous combination up top."

The Pioneers' best scoring chance came midway through the second half when a high volley shot by Taylor Hudson was fisted into the cross bar by Whitworth keeper Andrea Stump.

The Pirates led L&C in total shots, 20-10, and in shots on-goal, 12-7.

"It was a good performance overall by the team," Hagerott said. "We were assertive in stepping to the ball which allowed us to maintain possession and create scoring opportunities."

After beginning the season 0-4 against a very difficult non-conference schedule, the Pirates have rebounded to start the season 2-0 in NWC play.  Whitworth will continue conference play on Sunday by hosting Willamette at noon.
