THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – A dominant third quarter and suffocating defense propelled the William Smith Herons to a 78-49 victory over the Whitworth in the Pirates' first game at the Regals Classic.
Juliana Gamboa led the Herons (4-4, 0-2 Liberty League) with 21 points. Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou earned a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Megan Dorney and Madison Moffat scored eight points each for the Pirates (6-4, 2-0 NWC), who were held to just 26.2% (16-61) shooting from the floor and made only 17.2% (5-29) of their shots beyond the arc.
After a up-and-down first quarter left the Herons with a 17-13 lead, William Smith began to pull away in the second quarter. After Madison Abbott's layup cut the Pirate deficit to two, William Smith went on a 12-3 run over the next 4:44 to take a 32-21 lead. Five Herons scored during the run before another layup from Abbott cut their lead to single digits before halftime.
The Herons built on their lead in the third quarter. Up 40-29 midway through the period, William Smith went on a 16-3 run that extended the lead to 24. Gamboa opened the run with a personal 7-0 spurt for the Herons.
William Smith finished the game shooting 50% (32-64) from the field and 34.8% (8-23) from three. The Herons won the rebounding battle 48-34.
The Pirates, who currently rank third in the Northwest Conference in assists per game, struggled to keep the ball moving, finishing with just four assists as a team.
Whitworth made 70.6% (12-17) of its free throws. William Smith shot 66.7% (6-9) from the charity stripe.
The Bucs will look to bounce back on Sunday when they close the Regals Classic against Cal Lutheran. The Pirates and Regals tip off at 4:00 p.m.
