WALLA WALLA, Wash. – An 18-8 third quarter helped 25th-ranked Whitman hold off visiting Whitworth 61-50 in a Northwest Conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night in the Sherwood Center.
The Blues remained unbeaten this season, improving to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the NWC. The Pirates dropped to 1-4, 0-2.
Whitworth was tied with Whitman after one quarter and still within 28-22 at halftime. But the Blues outscored the Bucs 18-8 in the third to open up a 46-30 lead through three quarters.
Whitman controlled the boards, outrebounding Whitworth 36-25, including a 13-4 edge on the offensive glass. That allowed the Blues to take nine more shots in the game. Whitman made 42.3% (22-52) from the field, while Whitworth shot 39.5% (17-43). Neither side had an advantage from three-point range, making two apiece.
Trailing by 18 points (50-32) early in the fourth quarter, Whitworth was able to close to within 56-47 after Callie Harwood scored three straight baskets. But only 1:28 remained in the game at that point.
Harwood scored a game-high 18 points and led the Bucs with eight rebounds, while Grace Douglas added 12 points.
Emily Rommel led Whitman with 15 points and seven boards while Chelsi Brewer scored 11.
Whitworth will return to Walla Walla on Friday and Saturday to play in the Kim Evanger Raney Classic at Whitman. The Pirates will play Colorado College on Friday and Louisiana College on Saturday. Both games tip at 4:00 pm.
