LA GRANDE, Ore. – Eastern Oregon steadily pulled away throughout the second half to defeat visiting Whitworth 72-47 in a non-conference women's basketball game on Tuesday night.
The Pirates, playing their first road game of the 2016-17 season, dropped to 1-2. The Mountaineers improved to 5-1 with a win in their home opener.
Whitworth made four of its first six shots to jump out to a quick 10-2 lead. Grace Douglas scored five of those points, including a three-pointer. EOU then scored 13 straight points, grabbing a 15-10 lead on a basket by Payton Parrish. The Bucs stayed within 16-14 after one quarter and took their final lead (17-16) on Erika Kuehn's three-pointer early in the second.
But then the Mountaineers defense clamped down, making it tougher for Whitworth to make shots. The Pirates made only three shots in the second period, finishing 3-14 (21.4%) from the field, including 1-7 (14.3%) from three-point range. EOU took a 31-23 lead into halftime.
The Mountaineers opened the third quarter on an 11-2 run and never led by less than double-digits the rest of the way. The Whitworth offense continued to struggle in the third quarter, hitting 4 of 17 (23.5%) from the floor.
Kuehn led the Pirates with 15 points off of the bench. She finished 6-12 from the field, including 3-4 from beyond the arc, setting her Whitworth career scoring mark. Douglas finished with 10 points as the only other Buc in double figures. The Pirates finished the game 18-59 (30.5%) from the floor and were only able to get to the free throw line seven times, going 5-7.
Ashley Knight led four EOU players in double figures with 15 points off of the bench. Maya Ah You added 14 points and seven rebounds, as the Mountaineers finished with a 44-28 edge in rebounding.
Whitworth will return to action on December 3rd when the Pirates open Northwest Conference play at Willamette University.
