NEWBERG, Ore. – The George Fox Bruins overcame an early deficit to defeat the Whitworth Pirates in a loser-out contest at the Northwest Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon.
The Bruins advance to take on either Linfield or Pacific (Ore.) in another loser-out game at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. The Pirates finish the season with a 24-18 record.
The Bucs got on the board early when Gayer lined a two-out double down the left-field line, scoring Michelle Silva and Chelsey Hayes. Kelsey Downey followed with a bloop single down the right field line to score Gayer and give the Bucs a 3-0 lead.
Whitworth nearly built on the lead in the following frames. In the second inning, the Pirates put runners on first and second and two outs, but Desi Graham was thrown out stealing third to end the inning. With the same scenario in the following inning, Downey lined out to shortstop to finish the threat.
The Bruins pushed seven runners across the plate in the third and fourth innings. George Fox re-took the lead in the third on a grand slam from Vargas and added three more runs in the fourth inning.
George Fox picked up three more runs in the sixth inning when Roni Braun and Alyssa Gonzalez hit back-to-back singles that drove in both.
After struggling early, Madison Sorensen held the Bucs scoreless for the game's final six innings. The senior gave up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts. Ashley Trueblood was hit with the loss for Whitworth. She allowed 4 runs in 1.2 innings of relief.
