Bruins Sweep Pirates in NWC Opener

NEWBERG, Ore. – Whitworth softball couldn't get its offense going and dropped a pair of shutout losses to the George Fox Bruins on Saturday afternoon. 

The Bucs fell to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in Northwest Conference play. The Bruins are now 7-1 and 2-0 in the NWC. 

Game 1: George Fox 7, Whitworth 0

The Bruins put five runs on the scoreboard in the first three innings and cruised to a win in both teams' Northwest Conference opener. 

Madelynn Vallejo drove in both of George Fox's runs in the second inning. With runners on first and second, Vallejo singled through the right side of the infield, plating both Bruins. 

In the third, Alyssa Gonzalez doubled to left field, scoring two more runners. Kimi Ito added another run when her single up the middle scored Gonzalez. 

Natalie Edlin led Whitworth offensively, going 2-3. Kaylie Lowery, Chelsey Hayes, Desi Graham, and Kelsey Downey also picked up hits for the Pirates. 

Ashley Trueblood was hit with the loss after allowing 7 runs in 4.1 innings. Madison Sorenson allowed 6 hits and struck out 7 Bucs to earn the shutout win. 

Game 2: George Fox 5, Whitworth 0

George Fox struck early again in the second game, scoring four runs in the second inning to earn a sweep. 

The scoring started with with a one-run single from Roni Braun with runners on first and third. Rebecca Pridmore continued the rally with an RBI single to left center, and Alex Parker scored Braun and Pridmore with a single through the middle. 

George Fox tacked on another run with a solo home run from Roni Braun in the fifth inning.

Desi Graham went 1-2 with a walk to lead Whitworth. Downey, Lowery, and Allie Rude all finished with hits as well. 

Abbie Bergerson earned the win with a shutout. She allowed four hits, struck out two batters and walked three Pirates. Madelyn Carlson took the loss.  

Up next: The Pirates remain in Newberg for another doubleheader with the Bruins tomorrow afternoon. The first game begins at 12 p.m. and first pitch of the second game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
