Pirates Earn Second Sweep of the Season

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – The Pirates scored three in the first inning and added another in the second to overtake host Cal Lutheran 4-2 in game one and followed that up by a 4-2 win on two RBIs from Shannon Wessel in a non-conference softball double header on Thursday afternoon. 

Game One: Whitworth 4, Cal Lu 2 

Whitworth got on the board early after a bunt and an error landed Kinsey McNaught on first and leadoff batter Myranda Ramirez on second. Wessel stepped up to the plate and hit a sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Ramirez home with only one out. Tessa Matthews singled to right field just two at bats later, driving in McNaught on a single to right field. Natalie Edlin then popped out to right field, but brought Silva home to give the Pirates a 3-0 cushion after the first half-inning. Cal Lutheran attempted to even the score on an Amanda Lewis' triple to left field, scoring Brittany Workman who advanced to first on a walk. The next at bat resulted in another RBI for CLU when Olivia Levya scored Lewis on a double to right field. 

To start off the second inning, Rheanne Lewis was hit by a pitch, resulting in a Whitworth base runner. Ramirez singled on a bunt in her second AB and advanced Lewis to second. McNaught drove Lewis home on a single to center field for the final score of the contest, 4-2. 

Ramirez was perfect from the batter's box, going 4-4 for Whitworth. Edlin, Matthews, Wessel, and McNaught each had one RBI in the win.Makenna Pellerin was perfect at 2-2, but both RBI's were brought in by Lewis (1-3) and Levya (0-3). 

Madi Perez faced 27 batters and gave up five hits with two earned runs, but recorded seven strikeouts to move to 4-0 on the season. Courtney Sooy drops her first showing of the season (0-1), giving up eleven hits on 35 at bats with three earned runs. She added only four strikeouts against a Whitworth squad that 11-31 with four walks. 

Game Two:  Whitworth 4, Cal Lutheran 3 

The scoring started in the top of the third, when Wessel doubled. driving home Logan Miller for her second RBI of the day and to give Whitworth a 1-0 lead. 

In the fourth inning, Morgan Portlock found herself on third base after a single and a fly out to center field. She scored on a double by Madi Perez, her first of the season. The Regals got in the board in the bottom of the fourth with a single to center field scoring Levya who was in scoring position after hitting a triple to right field. 

To start the fifth inning, Wessel earned her third RBI of the game, bringing home Miller for the second time. Later on in the inning, Michelle Silva singled with a bunt to score Miller once again and put the Pirates up 4-1. In the bottom of the fifth with two runners on, Lewis doubled to left center for two runs, cutting the lead to one, 4-3.

Miller went 2-4 for the Pirates and scored twice to lead the team. Antonia Rapisardi went 3-3 with an RBI for the Regals. 

Sarah Ballinger improves to 2-0 with the win and Ashley Trueblood earned her first save of the season. Brittany Workman gets her first loss of the season to drop to 0-1 for Cal Lutheran, giving up two hits and two runs.

Next Up: The Whitworth softball team will turn around and head to Whittier for a double header on Friday, Feb. 10 starting at noon.
