Whitworth Men Fall to Whitman 8-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting Whitman remained unbeaten in Northwest Conference play and host Whitworth is still looking for its first win of 2017 after the Missionaries topped the Pirates 8-1 in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Saturday morning. 

Whitman improved to 9-2 overall and 3-0 in the NWC while Whitworth dropped to 0-5, 0-3. 

Jake Bethards earned the Pirates' only point of the match when he topped Trevor Fennessy 6-3, 7-5 at #4 singles.  Bethards improved to 2-3 in singles this season.

The Missionaries swept the three doubles matches.  The closest came at the top of the ladder where Whitman's Zach Hewlin and Rajul Chikkalingaiah edged Whitworth's Shane Sandlin and Jeffrey Vulis 8-6.  Fennessy and Daniel Foster got by the Pirate pair of Ian Fisher and Ben Bethards 8-5 at #3.

Whitman swept the top three singles contests in straight sets.  Hewlin beat Sandlin 6-1, 6-2 at #1 singles, while Chase Friedman topped Hughes 6-3, 6-2 at #2 singles.  Fisher fell to Robert Carter 6-1, 6-2 at #3 singles.

Chikkalingaiah defeated Vulis 6-3, 6-2 at #5 singles and Alex Hwang knocked off Ben Bethards 6-1, 6-2 at #6 singles.  Jake Bethards' match was the final contest to be completed on Saturday.

Whitworth will complete the weekend with an exhibition, non-counting match against CC of Spokane on Sunday.  An exhibition match originally against Skagit Valley College has been cancelled.
