Lutes Shut Out Bucs on the Road

PARKLAND, Wash. – A second half goal from Nick Brundage turned out to be enough as the Pacific Lutheran Lutes shut out the Whitworth Pirates 1-0 in Saturday afternoon's Northwest Conference men's soccer match.

The Lutes (12-4, 8-2 NWC) evened the season series against the Pirates (4-9-3, 3-5-2 NWC) with the win. Whitworth defeated Pacific Lutheran 3-0 when the two teams squared off in Spokane.

Brundage's goal was the only one for either team on the day. The junior's score came on a free kick after Ty Cardinale was given a yellow card. It was also the only shot on target either team was able to take as both the Pirates and the Lutes struggled to create meaningful scoring chances.

Whitworth was able to create a few opportunities in the second half after failing to take a shot in the first 45 minutes. Azzam Azzam took the Bucs' first attempt just 25 seconds after halftime, but it was blocked. Scott Penner and Jose Bautista both looked to head in match-tying goals later in the half, but neither could knot the match at one.

The Lutes finished with advantages in shots (6-3) and corner kicks (4-3). Neither goalkeeper recorded a save on the day as the only shot on target was a goal.

The two teams combined for 25 fouls and 4 yellow cards. Cardinale and Azzam Azzam were the Pirates cautioned, while Matt Koczan and Keegan Dolan were the Lutes who saw yellow.

Up next, Whitworth stays on the west side of Washington to take on the Puget Sound. The match kicks off at 2:30 p.m.
