Whitworth Takes Down Puget Sound 2-1

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth defeated Puget Sound 2-1 on goals from Alfredo Ornelas and Moi Diaz in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday.

The Pirates  (10-3-2, 8-1-2 NWC) finished with 15 total shots (nine on goal), holding Puget Sound (8-5-2, 5-4-2 NWC) to 12 shots and eight on goal. Ornelas put all three of his shots on target. Six Whitworth players each had one shot on goal.

The Pirates dominated possession of the ball, keeping it out of the Loggers' attacking third for the majority of the game. Whitworth's Alfredo Ornelas opened up scoring on a header goal in the ninth minute off of a cross from Aaron Yanagi to give Whitworth an early one-goal advantage. In the 39st minute, Puget Sound got on the board after a Timmy Costa save fell to the feet of Zac Lokay who finished to even the score at 1-1.

In the 53rd minute, Tyler Cardinale put a cross into the box towards Aaron Yanagi who knocked it down to the feet of Moi Diaz for the go ahead goal. Ten minutes later, after a one-on-one save, Whitworth GK Timmy Costa was issued a yellow card after attempting to dive through a Puget Sound player to secure possession in the box. Ezra Kraus stepped up to take the penalty kick for the Loggers and fired a shot to the bottom right corner that was stopped by Costa.

Costa (7-2-2) finished the game with six saves. Jacob Palmer falls to 4-3-2 after a seven save performance.

Next Up: The Pirates will take their final road trip of the NWC regular season to Oregon to face Linfield and Willamette on Oct. 29 and 30.
