Pirates Win Battle of the Whits 2-1

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitworth men's soccer team defeated Northwest Conference opponent Whitman College in the Battle of the Whits on Saturday, 2-1. 

The Pirates (7-3-1, 5-1-1 NWC) had one more shot (17) than Whitman (7-4-2, 3-2-2 NWC) and both teams were on target six times. Rylan Berriman had three shots on goal and one goal for Whitworth. Pirate standout Jonah Snyder had one shot on target and one goal. 

Snyder scored in the 60th minute on an assist from Austin Cassity to give Whitworth a 1-0 lead. A late penalty in the 85th minute sent Noah Cavanaugh to the penalty spot where he was able to even the score. Just two minute later, in the 87th minute, Alfredo Ornelas found Berriman for the game-winning goal. 

Pirate GK Timmy Costa had five saves and gave up one goal to improve to 4-2-1 on the year. Owen Davis-Bower (5-3-1) had four saves for Whitman. 

Next Up: The Pirates will have a full week to prepare for a road trip to Oregon where they will face NWC opponents George Fox and Pacific (Ore.).
