SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth scored one goal in each half to take down Northwest Conference opponent George Fox in a men's soccer match at the Whitworth Soccer Field on Sunday.
The Pirates (6-3-1 overall, 4-1-1) outshot the Bruins (1-9-1 overall, 1-5 NWC) 28-6 in total shots (10-4 in shots on goal). Whitworth held George Fox to only one shot in the second half after Victor Garcia received his second yellow card in the 57th minute and the Bruins were forced to play man down for the remainder of the game.
George Fox scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute on a long shot from midfield by Joel Schierman over the head of Whitworth goalkeeper Tony Watters who was playing well outside of the box. Jonah Snyder evened the score in the 34th minute on a header off of a cross from Rylan Berriman.
Five yellow cards, four awarded to the Bruins (two to Garcia) was the result of a physical game. Daniel Alonzo and Connor Lopez were cautioned for George Fox. Snyder was given the only yellow card for Whitworth in the 72nd minute.
Watters played all 90 minutes in his first conference start of 2016. He recorded three saves and gave up one goal to improve to 2-0 for the season. Andrew Phillis had eight saves and gave up two goals in a tremendous effort for the Bruins.
Coming Up: The Pirates will travel to Whitman on Saturday, Oct. 8 before taking another road trip to Oregon to face George Fox on the road on Oct. 14. Whitworth will stay in Oregon and face Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday, Oct 16.
