EWING, N.J. – Jonah Snyder scored a game-winning goal with 14 seconds left in the match to lift visiting Whitworth to a dramatic 4-3 win over The College of New Jersey on Sunday at the TCNJ Adidas Classic.
The Pirates (2-1) led 3-0 in the early minutes of the second half before the Lions rallied for three goals in a three minute stretch of the second half to tie the match.
Whitworth put eight of 15 shots on target. TCNJ's aggressive playing style led to 24 total shots and 13 shots on goal.
In the 13th minute, Tyler Pangia found Austin Cassity for the Pirates' first goal of the game. Alfredo Ornelas scored in the 15th minute off a pass from Rylan Berriman to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
TCNJ almost found the back of the net in the 52nd minute when a scrum in the box led to two shots that were saved by Tony Watters and a leg save by Whitworth defender Kyle Morris. Snyder then headed in a corner kick from Micah Weller past Lion GK Jake Nesteruk in the 53rd minute for the 3-0 Whitworth lead.
TCNJ's comeback started when Domenic Polidoro found Clayton Flon off of a set piece in the 66th minute. In the 67th minute, Nick Costelloe intercepted a pass at midfield from Watters and lobbed it into the net from 40 yards. Mateo Panizza made a one-on-one move past a Whitworth defender and finished in the 69th minute to tie the game 3-3.
Snyder scored the match-winning goal with 14 seconds to play, finishing off a pass from Cassity. It was Snyder's fifth goal of the season. Cassity finished the match with one goal and one assist.
Tony Watters had nine saves for Whitworth. Nesteruk had three saves for the Lions.
Whitworth will finish the three-game road trip to New Jersey against 14th ranked Montclair State in Montclair, N.J. before coming home to start off Northwest Conference play at home against Willamette and Linfield Sept. 17 and 18.
