Baseball Completes Series Sweep of L&C

SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth University pounded out 19 runs on 28 hits to sweep visiting Lewis & Clark College 9-2 and 10-5 in a baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Merkel Field.

The Pirates improved to 18-10 overall and 9-9 in the Northwest Conference and are now tied for fourth place in the NWC standings.  The top four teams in the league standings at the end of the season qualify for the conference tournament.  The Bucs appear to be rebounding from an 0-5 start to their conference schedule.

Whitworth will play at third place Linfield College next weekend in another four-game series.

Game 1 – Whitworth 9, Lewis & Clark 2
JT Phelan and Jacob Yamane each drove in a pair of runs to back eight strong innings from starting pitcher Matthew Young in Sunday's opener.

Young allowed only one run on four hits in his eight innings to improve to 4-2 this season.  He struck out eight Pioneers and walked one.  Connor Sand pitched the ninth and gave up one run.

The Pirates got on the board in the first when Yamane's double drove in Phelan with two outs.  L&C tied the game in the fourth on Akira Abderrahman's third home run of the season.

Whitworth broke the game open with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth.  Yamane led off the fifth with his third home run of the spring.  Phelan added a two-run single later in the fifth and Jordan McGowan singled home the final run of the frame.  Ryan Bird's RBI single capped the two-run rally in the sixth that increased the lead to 8-1.

Whitworth added a final, unearned run in the seventh.

Yamane finished 3-4 at the plate while Phelan went 3-5.  Garrett Hughes was also 3-5 and scored two runs as the Pirates' leadoff hitter.

Robert Reaser started on the mound for L&C and fell to 2-4 after allowing six runs on 11 hits in 4.2 innings.  Abderrahman was the only Pioneer to have more than one hit in the game and went 2-3.

Game 2 – Whitworth 10, Lewis & Clark 5
Cody Simmons went 3-4 and Phelan scored four times to lead the Pirates to a win in the series finale, which was officially a non-conference contest.

Phelan doubled in one run and Simmons doubled in two more to highlight the Pirates' five-run first inning.  Whitworth added a run in the second on an RBI single off of the bat of Nicholas Nerud.  The Bucs increased the lead to 7-0 in the third when Phelan scored his second run of the game after a double by Hughes got away from the left fielder.

L&C got three runs back in the top of the fifth when Sean Shepherd drilled a three run home run.  But Whitworth scored two in the bottom of the fifth when Simmons singled home a run and scored on Jake Desidorio's double for a 9-3 Pirate lead.

Brady Simmilink started on the mound for the Pirates and improved to 3-0 after allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings.  He struck out four and walked two.  JD Page, Taylor Hillmick and Collin Anderson finished up the game as relievers.

Simmons finished with three RBIs to lead Whitworth's hitters.  Phelan went 2-3 in the second game to finish the day 5-8 at the plate.  Matthew Nelson and Bird also had a pair of hits in the second game.

Starting pitcher Andrew Yarak fell to 2-5 for L&C after he allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in three innings.  Three relievers followed for the Pioneers.  Shepherd went 3-4 with three RBIs to lead L&C hitters.
