WILSONVILLE, Ore. – Jacob Yamane went 3-5 with five runs batted in, including a grand slam, to lead Whitworth to a 15-4 win over Willamette University in a non-conference baseball game on Sunday afternoon at Wilsonville High School.
Yamane's grand slam, his first home run of the season, highlighted a seven-run, seventh inning for the Pirates, who improved to 2-1. Yamane also singled in a run in the third inning.
Daniel Casanova went 3-4 with a pair of RBIs and four runs scored as Whitworth's leadoff hitter. Matthew Nelson, who homered in the Bucs' win over Lewis & Clark on Saturday, added an RBI triple on Sunday and finished 2-4 with three RBIs.
Whitworth never trailed after scoring two runs each in the first, fourth and sixth innings and single runs in the third and fifth to open an 8-3 lead. The Pirates then posted seven runs in the seventh, capped by Yamane's blast.
Matthew Young started on the mound for Whitworth and allowed three runs on two hits and four walks in 3.1 innings. She struck out one.
Tim Bever picked up the win with 2.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing three hits. Taylor Hillmick (two innings, one run) and Kelly Fitzpatrick (one inning, no runs) finished up on the hill for the Bucs.
Brandon Nelson started for the Bearcats (3-3) and took the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits and four walks in four innings. Five relievers finished up the game for Willamette.
Whitworth will travel to California next weekend for five games, including a three-game set at Pomona-Pitzer.
