Ryan Cooney played college baseball at California Lutheran University, where he earned All-SCIAC honors as a junior in 2002. He grew up in Northern California and attended Tamalpais High School. As a senior Cooney was Co-MVP of the MCAL and went on to play.
While at CLU Cooney developed a strong friendship with former MLB manager Sparky Anderson, who was a friend of the program and neighbor to the campus. Also during his time at CLU Cooney coached and helped run the Lu Dawg youth baseball summer camps. A couple years removed from graduating in 2003, Ryan became an Assistant coach at College of Marin for two years, working under Steve Berringer. Between those two years at College of Marin, he coached the Marin Merchants in the Sacramento Rural Summer League.
Since 2015, Ryan has served as a co-head coach of the 12u Bombers Travel Baseball Club. During the 2016-17 baseball season, he rejoined the coaching staff at College of Marin serving as the head assistant and helped lead the Mariners to the Bay Valley Conference title and an opening series victory in the California Community College State Playoffs. He also served as the recruiting coordinator and community liaison for the baseball program.
Outside of baseball, Ryan serves as the Director of School and Community Engagement for Summer Search Bay Area, a national youth development organization committed to supporting low-income students achieve success in their lives. Ryan, his wife and two young children have relocated to Spokane to surround themselves with family and so he can pursue his passion for coaching college baseball full-time.
